Claude Gillot, a draughtsman and printmaker of the late Grand Siècle, is celebrated for his inventive and original works that foreshadow the Régence period (1715–1723). Known for satire, comedy, and the performing arts, his drawings span diverse fields like illustration, theatre, opera, costume, and interior decoration. At the core of his art lies a rich collection illustrating the Comédie Italienne's comedy, featuring pantomimes and cross-dressing figures. As a sought-after costume designer for the Paris Opera from 1712, Gillot also collaborated with Claude Audran III, reinventing arabesque painting in the process.
